Can i get my house deposit back?

In February this year we moved out of our flat. We received a letter from the deposit protection agency saying that our landlord wanted to retain £475.00 of our £500.00 deposit. They claimed this was for re-painting the whole house, carpet cleaning and oven cleaning. We completely disagreed with this. We had done a few touch ups around the house which we felt didn’t warrant a full repaint. We therefore disputed this with the DPS. In the end we agreed to pay half towards the work (which we still felt was too much) so only received back £262.50 in the end.

My cousin happened to move into the house next. Still to this day they have not repainted the house, had the carpets cleaned or had the oven cleaned. My cousin is now leaving the house and when they came round to do the inventory check, she asked them when they were going to do the work in the house that i paid for out of my deposit. The estate agency have said that the Landlord is refusing to get the work done because she didn’t agree with the outcome of our dispute and is refusing to pay half towards getting the work done.

My question is, shouldn’t i be entitled to my money back if she is not getting the work done? In theory she has taken money from me in order to get work done, isn’t this kind of stealing from me…like fraud or something?

Small businesses – the best return advertising for least money?

What have been some of your most successful advertising campaigns for small businesses – I’m a painter and decorator and am just setting out so I have VERY little money to outlay. I am going to do the local paper and am in Yellow Pages, but what about websites or similar that people have used? All advice welcomed.

how to get my parents to start decorating the house?

They’ve been thinking about painting the house, but they never get round to it. It looks awful right now and some of the furniture needs cleaning. I think it’s disgusting but my parents say they’ve got better stuff to do. it makes me hate living there.. help ? thanx
I don’t earn money by the way so I can’t buy anything over a few pounds.
And I can’t really decorate my room without my sister talking to me all the time, we share a room. i have a question on that if you have the time to answer : http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ApI7UNOoyWk_kMIeX1RKaWETBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20110115091059AA3IH4Q

Should I do this for the sake of my football club?

I am leaving secondary school and I want to train to become a Painter and Decorator. Should I do a course at college or do an Apprenticeship? You get £100 or more a week, and that would pay for all the away games next season (I support Barnsley). Normally I am saving every penny I get just to travel to away games, and this money would really help for next season. What do u think?

How did people pay for small things like apples in the middle ages?

I was reading that Holbein, the court painter was paid £30 a year for his work. So, in today’s money that’d be at least £30,000 a year? So, a quid would be worth £1000, so how the hell did you buy small items – surely the money would be too big??

i have recently letted my house out to a polish family..?

well they are not a family but friends that know each other.
I exchanged contracts on 19th may, and their demands were that i paint the kitchen for them, and change bedroom door, and give another double bed, and sort toilet area out which i have completed.
they gave me 700 deposit and said would give me remaining 200 after completion of work. I have finished painting the kitchen today and asked for money but they keep being rude too me, It was part of terms and conditions on contract. Another 900 payable every 19th of the month. When i rented out house back garden was clean but now they have taken a dressing table and put it in the garden and carpet that was in the kitchen outside in the rain and said they want it cleared. Surely i shouldnt have to clean their mess, where do i stand legally as they are very rude. Contract is for 6 months.
i purchased a ready made contract from w h smith. terms and conditions were in small print. Stating clearly if any damage was occured money would be deducted. I cant throw them out as its a six month contract.
