How to gloss paint over stained wood.?

The wood banister and skirting boards in my hall have all been stained a very dark brown. When we bought the house we painted over with white gloss but it just keeps chipping.
Anyone know how to stop this happening, is their anything i can use to treat the wood before i paint over it.?

What can you paint woodwork in that doesn't completely stink?

We have a lot of woodwork which needs painting in our house.

I did some glosswork yesterday and the smell made me feel incredibly sick. It doesn’t help that I’m 6 months pregnant either (and apparently shouldn’t even be using gloss)

What else can we use that won’t smell so bad?

Painters and decorators? Help please?

Hi to all you painters and decorators out there. Can you help me with some advice please? I have rubbed down, filled and rubbed down again my front door. I have today given it a light coating of undercoat. Should I rub it down again (lightly with say 240 grit sandpaper) before I apply my top coat? I will be using a one coat gloss paint. Or do I just go ahead and slap the top coat on and not worry. I did a good job of sanding it down in the first place and the door was as smooth as a baby’s bottom. Any useful hints and tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
