Any tips on using sugar soap on painted woodwork?
The paintwork in my house – doors, skirting boards – is discoloured through tobacco smoke. I intend using Mangers Sugar Soap to clean it down, now that we have both stopped smoking.
I have read somewhere that unless you wash every last trace of it off the woodwork, you will have problems painting. But I don’t intend painting it for a while – the paint is sound. Its just discolouration.
Any experiences or tips?

Help! Painters/decorators colour advice badly needed!!?
I’ve painted my kitchen walls with dulux willow tree which is a fresh minty green. One full wall is completely wood panels with 3 full size cubboard doors of odd shapes and sizes, this house is 400 yrs old. The wood wall we had painted dulux amazon, well it looks dreadful, it’s overwhelming. I’m going to have to re-paint all the wood in a different colour. Amazon is a deep blue/green colour. Any idea’s what colour I can re-paint the wood in? I’m thinking green is going to be too much? The wood wall is floor to ceiling there’s no wall at all and no door frames etc, Please advice, I’ve spent a fortune on tins of paint, dulux gooseberry was far too light on the wood.

Female Painters and Decorators – your views please!?
I have started up a business as a female painter and decorator covering Manchester and West Yorkshire. When I first had the idea everyone was so supportive and thought it was a novel concept but, despite being in Yellow Pages, having a catchy name (Decor Divas) and shoving flyers through doors, nothing’s happening. Everyone I’ve given cards or flyers to has been really enthusiastic and said they would definitely use a female decorator rather than have a man they don’t know in their house (sorry guys) but nobody’s calling. I’m totally broke so can’t afford big advertising ideas but I gave up my job to do this … so I’m just wondering – am I dilluded or was it a good business idea really? If so, do you have any ways I can promote my business without it costing me loads of dosh?

Is it possible to get sadoline out of wood?
The people we bought our house from painted the doors, frames, windowsills, etc in sadoline which is *very* red. I want to paint the the woodwork white, but will the pain stay on? Will it chip off easily? Will I need to sand or plane the wood?

How long should I wait after painting with gloss paint, before my 5 month old baby can be safe in the house?
We used low fume paint, but glossed the skirtings, doors and radiators with gloss paint (so oil based) 24 hrs ago. Th windows were open during the decorating, but closed afterwards.

How to deal with a wayward painter and decorator.?
He has decorated my house but has left the doors and has not painted them, maybe I did not mention him to paint them, but now I have given him all his money plus a fiver extra, how can I get him to paint the inside doors, without paying extra, what do you guys suggest. He has left some work he said he will do and has left them and not mentioned them. He is comming back in a weeks time, to finish off another job how shall I approach him to do the other jobs as well as paint the doors, I am not a very assertive person and hate conflict.

Getting inside of my House painted?
Hi I live in Ireland. I am after getting a price of 100 euro for a very big sitting room ( wall and ceiling ) and 80 euro for each additional room. 200 euro for any gloss to be done like 5 doors, door frames and skirting plus stair Bannister. Can anyone help me is this a fair price, thanks.

is it the joiners job or the painters job to fill in the holes made while putting on door frames?
our joiner thinks it is the painters job and the painter thinks its the joiners job? my facing and doors are going to be stained and varnished and there is some holes in the wood?
has anyone conducted study regarding effect the paint fumes have on a painters lungsl?
I have recently painted some doors in our home the rooms were well venti;lated but, the fumes from the paint was terrible, how on earth painters manage to work in that situation I do not know, is any protection available for these tradesmen, and who should enforce this. Their lungs must be under stress day in day out.
