Are there any avid Bob Ross style painters out there who could advise me please?
I have been attempting this type of painting for several weeks now and I’m not doing too well. I cannot use a painting knife at all. I am useless with it. Do you have any suggestions regarding how to put snow on mountains with a brush instead?
Also I just cannot get the hang of painting evergreen trees the way Bob Ross did. I have several sizes of fan brushes and just make a mess with each one. I cannot get the angle right and I always get very thick clumsy looking branches. I’ve watches closely how he holds the brush and try to do the same but it isn’t working.
Did any of you find this difficult and how did you overcome the problem?
Thanks debonair, that is good advice. I haven’t bought any actual Bob Ross equipment but have bought the same shaped knife at a price I could afford and some lower priced fan brushes and an assortment of other brushes. I also do not use the thick paint that he used. It is very expensive. I don’t expect to get exactly the same results as he did because thinner/cheaper paint probably won’t go on the same but I’m not getting anything remotely similar.
I had never painted at all before this so whatever way I choose to paint is going to be new to me anyway and he has, at least, sparked an interest in painting in someone who never even thought to try before.
I think I might give the cotton buds a try for certain effects. Now they are in my price range!!
I wasn’t serious abut the cotton buds by the way, but I will, seriously, think about various ways of applying paint besides knives and brushes. I probably need to experiment more and not worry about the end result too much at this stage.

how do pointilist painters do it?
You have to stand a long way back to fully appreciate a picture made up of thousands of tiny dabs of paint. Do the artists use brushes with six foot long handles, or perhaps look through the wrong end of a pair of binoculars when they are working?
